AMERICAN RED CROSS, NORTHEAST GEORGIA CHAPTER, WINS “BEST PRACTICES IN STORAGE AWARD” FOR PROTECTING DATA WITH LIVEVAULT

Storage Networking World Honors American Red Cross, Northeast Georgia Chapter,
for Exemplary Deployment of Storage Technology

MARLBOROUGH, MASS., April 15, 2004 – LiveVault Corporation®, the leading provider of online backup and recovery solutions for business servers, today announced that its customer, American Red Cross, Northeast Georgia Chapter, has been recognized by IDG’s Computerworld and the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA), as a winner of Storage Networking World’s “Best Practices in Storage” Award. The award honors organizations that have applied unique solutions to overcoming storage challenges. Winners received a memento of their achievement during a special awards ceremony at Storage Networking World (SNW) Spring 2004, held at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort in Phoenix, Ariz.

A wide range of IT end-user companies and organizations responded to an initial “call for nominations,” which was originally announced in February 2004 to multiple industry audiences, including all SNIA member companies and Computerworld subscribers responsible for storage solutions. A hundred finalists were evaluated by a panel of enterprise and storage industry experts based on case study submissions that profiled the company, its IT department and storage challenges, as well as application deployment details, summaries of the key technology used and measurable solution outcomes.

Judges of the program were:

  • Rick Bauer, CIO, The Hill School
  • Mark Diamond, Chair, SNIA SSIF Customer Advisory Board
  • Bruce Hoard, Executive Editor, SNWOnline.com
  • Ellen J. Lary, CEO, Tutelary LLC and Partner, IN_fusion LLC
  • Jamie Matlin, President, Jobstor.com
  • Norman Owens, Storage Networking Analyst, Carlson Companies
  • Dave Simpson, Editor-in-Chief, InfoStor
  • Bruce Thompson, Consultant, SanTech Consulting
  • Richard Villars, Vice President - Storage Systems, IDC
  • Andy Uhrinek, Senior Architect, Cingular Wireless

“Storage networking technology is used by organizations in virtually every industry, ranging from non-profits, like the Northeast Georgia Chapter of the American Red Cross, to global banks like Barclays,” said Leo Leger, vice president of Strategic Initiatives for Computerworld. “This year’s winners are indicative of the crucial role storage technology has played in improving business practices throughout the past year.”

The Northeast Georgia Chapter of the Red Cross, winner in the Storage Reliability and Data Recovery category, provides disaster assistance, health and safety training, free community courses and helps families track down service men and women in times of urgency. The chapter maintains a database of its 1,100 volunteers, and information on the people it has provided disaster assistance to in the past. These files are critical to the Red Cross’ ability to dispatch volunteers. Unfortunately, the Red Cross itself is not immune from disaster, and needs to have its own plan in place for recovery. In fact, the National Headquarters of the American Red Cross requires that the chapter back up electronic files offsite and be able to recover them quickly in the event of a disaster. The Northeast Georgia Chapter uses the LiveVault Online Backup and Recovery Service™ to automatically and continuously back up server data via a secure Internet connection and store it in a secure offsite facility, where it is available for immediate recovery in the event of a disaster.

“We are impressed by the fact that LiveVault backs up data continuously, whereas other online services only back up incrementally. This assures us that we will be able to recover data up to the minute of the data-loss event, rather than up to the last time someone remembered to do a tape backup,” said Paul Allen, head of IT support, American Red Cross, Northeast Georgia Chapter. “I’ve been extremely happy with LiveVault. I absolutely recommend it to anyone.”

The LiveVault service is designed for customers whose servers reside outside of major data centers—such as enterprise remote or branch offices or small and mid-sized businesses —and who have primarily relied on in-house tape backups to keep their data safe. Analysts estimate nearly 50 percent of tape-based backups for these distributed servers fail to restore properly, seriously compromising the operations, and potentially the viability, of affected companies. Conversely, LiveVault's fully managed service delivers 100 percent data recoverability.
